Multi-store retail build-outs for Calgary’s best bike shop

54blue worked closely with the crew at Calgary Cycle to reset the 85-year-old brand, building five brand-driven, retail environments in Calgary and Bragg Creek

WHAT WE DID

We carefully dismantled and built back up a classic brand that will now be scalable in a modern marketplace.

Brand

The world of cycling has changed massively in the past 85 years. Since its founding, the Calgary Cycle brand had been updated at least a dozen times. 54blue Brand Director Jamie Calon helped the owners rip the branding down to its foundation and reset it with a clear and sustainable brand direction. Touching on all foundational elements – culture, brand pillars, and consumer – the new brand trajectory was identified.

With a clear path to follow, the growth plan came into focus. This spurred the development of three unique premium retail stores, a high-end cafe and, of course, a new and modern e-commerce experience.

3D design

When the brand direction is clean and set, 54blue’s design experts can begin evolving it into the consumer experience. The 3D team starts the collaboration with the Brand Director and the owners to design brick-and-mortar spaces. The creative team then collaborates with the Brand Director and the owners to extend the brand into the digital and print worlds.

Retail builds

Every store starts with a single, unified plan. Using the prototype 3D layout, the 54blue fabrication team guides the trades to shape the retail envelope for the perfect Calgary Cycle consumer environment. We then bring all the critical elements to life with a million volts of creative building and elbow grease.

Print

With purpose-built spaces designed to illuminate creative print messaging, the environments receive a nice peppering of print crafted to add value and not distract from the experience.

Interactive

With all brick-and-mortar elements firing, calgarycycle.com needed to have its facelift. Ninety-nine percent of cycling retailers’ websites come from a few pre-canned templates. 54blue started with the original, complex inventory POS and very generic e-commerce plug-in, and applied its creativity to develop a unique hybrid site. The result was a win-win: a super clean custom-built interface mashed up with the rock-solid back end from the POS. See it @ calgarycycle.com.

Maintenance

As with every living thing, brands need maintenance. 54blue works day in, day out to maintain and evolve the spaces and image of the brand and acts as the de facto art department for Calgary Cycle. Best Friends Forever!
